Don’t be fooled by Sabrina Carpenter’s short stature and sickly sweet vocals, the ‘Espresso,’ singer packs quite the punch. After she opened 13 shows in Latin America for Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour,’ this time last year and caused a stir with her first-ever Coachella performance last April, she set her sights on releasing her sixth studio album: ‘Short N Sweet.’ And after much anticipation, the ‘Short N Sweet,’ album was finally available for streaming on the 23rd of August.
The album contains 12 tracks and they are called “Taste,” “Please Please Please,” “Good Graces,” “Sharpest Tool,” “Coincidence,” “Bed Chem,” “Espresso,” “Dumb & Poetic,” “Slim Pickins,” “Juno,” “Lie To Girls,” and “Don’t Smile.” These songs combined make a very witty and sarcastic tracklist that runs for 36 minutes.
With lyrics such as “this boy doesn’t even know the difference between there, their and they are,” in “Slim Pickins,” and “fuck with my head like it’s some kind of fetish,” in “Dumb & Poetic,” we can see Sabrina’s clever and creative side as she talks about her failed situationships with silly phrases that resonate with her listeners. Sabrina’s sarcasm and wit make the lyrics more playful and add a humorous undertone to the tunes.
It all seems very on-brand for Sabrina though, as she has been known to create new outros for her song “Nonsense,” and engage in banter throughout her interviews. She has never been one to take herself too seriously and nothing captures this better than the music video she released on the same day as the album.
The music video was for her song “Taste,” and it involved a love triangle between Sabrina and two characters played by Jenna Ortega, and Kit Connor. The video began with a blood-thirsty Sabrina attempting to murder Jenna’s character as Jenna’s character tried to defend herself. It then continued with the pair feuding until a shocking twist came along and the narrative was flipped. You’ll just have to watch it yourself to see what I mean. There’s no spoilers here! Let’s just say that Sabrina seemed to pour all of herself into the album and her personality certainly shines through.
Sabrina acknowledged this herself in an Instagram post uploaded to her account 6 days ago as she explained the thought process behind the album through a caption: "I feel extremely lucky that each time I write a new record I learn a little bit more about myself, and can create from that place. The making of short n’ sweet was one of the most special, honest, up and down, stupid and fun experiences of my life. I thought if something was funny enough to make me laugh then maybe it belonged in a song. Happy or sad!” She then thanked all the people behind the album for bringing her “songs to life.”
‘Short N Sweet,’ is available on streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. It is also available on YouTube.
