If, like me, your adolescence was filled with chaotic Dance Moms episodes and an obsession with Musical.ly, I’m sure that you’re aware of Kenzie Ziegler. Kenzie was one of the youngest dancers on the show Dance Moms and her sassy personality is what made fans gravitate towards her on and off the show. Her fanbase extended past the usual Lifetime reality TV show viewers, to Musical.ly and beyond. It was perhaps the result of living in the Musical.ly era that we saw her branch out and try new passions of hers. Yet, perhaps it was always meant to be that way. No matter the reason, Kenzie has now found her footing in music, and what a talent she has!

Her latest single ‘Bad 4 u,’ has just been released to tease her upcoming album ‘Biting My Tongue.’  The song gives an interesting insight into what’s to come, with its melancholic tone and monochrome visualiser. In the visualiser, Kenzie sings about her desire to get entangled in a bad relationship so she can “feel something new.” She then proceeds to dance around a dark room whilst bathing in the light of a window. It has some very simple, yet impactful imagery that signifies the juxtaposition of good and bad and dark and light. This makes the song a touching addition to the album.

With songs such as anatomy and paper already finding spots within the album, the rawness of ‘Bad 4 u,’ is perfectly placed. We can see a more candid side to Kenzie with the song as it speaks to the side of her that is vulnerable and frank about her troubles. It is a side of her that all of us can relate to to some extent. We are all human and trying to navigate the ups and downs of life. With the good, there will always be the bad. That’s why this album is something I will be anticipating. Sometimes we need to reflect on the bad to know how to move forward with the good and sometimes we need to relate to songwriters who made the same rash decisions we did.
