Katy Perry Is Killing It & Her Newest Album Might Just Prove It!

When you think of Katy Perry do you think of her eccentric personality and sci-fi inspired music videos like I do? Perhaps you think of the catchy lyrics in her well-known hits instead. Whatever it may be, I’m sure you won’t deny that she is an extraordinary singer with many memorable attributes to her name. 

Her most recent musical venture for us to remember her by is her new album ‘143,’ which is set to be released on the 20th of September. The pop princess teased the new album on her Instagram on the 10th of July with a cryptic post captioned with “SLEEP TIGHT. FOR TOMORROW, THE PORTAL OPENS.” Another post was then uploaded to her feed shortly after, explaining that her album ‘143,’ was going to be released and you could pre-order it on KatyPerry.com. Both of the 10th of July posts have given us a glimpse of the album’s cover art as they both feature a partially nude Katy in a bright orange and blue portal. This imagery is said to be featured on all of the album’s covers in some capacity. For example, the same portal is seen on her Target exclusive album cover but without the orange and, instead of being nude on her top half, she is covered with a heart-shaped top. Her vinyl cover also contains similar imagery, with a blue and orange swirl snaking around her naked body.

Katy’s album appears to support female-empowerment by ironically featuring nudity to make a statement about the male gaze and how women can still embrace their divine feminine while appearing sexy. In a video uploaded on the 13th of July, Katy mocked the male gaze with promotion for her song “Woman’s World,” and a caption reading “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! EVEN SATIRE!” 

The female-driven “Woman’s World,” is actually one of the singles that will be on the ‘143,’ album and it is already available for streaming. 

Another single which is likely to be on the album is the upbeat “Lifetimes,” which is going to be released today at 3 pm PT. The promotional material for this single seems to indicate this as Katy took to Instagram on the 29th of July to share an image of her holding a dripping heart under the capitalised title “LIFETIMES.” The caption simply said: “LIFETIMES. AUGUST 9. SONG + VIDEO. PRE-SAVE NOW. KATY.TO/LIFETIMES.” 

This post is eerily similar to the ‘143,’ posts as it has the same colour scheme and references to love hearts. Funnily enough, Katy actually confirmed that the title ‘143’ was code for ‘I love you,’ on the post about her Target exclusive cover uploaded on the 23rd of July. This seems to make it obvious that ‘LIFETIMES,’ is one of the ‘143’ tracks. 

The other tracks on the album are yet to be confirmed and we’ll likely have to hold out until the 30th of September to truly know the rest. But what’s your opinion on what we know so far? Let me know in the comments.
