Focusing on the introverted Francesca Bridgerton and outgoing Michaela Kilmartin, Season 5 will see the first sapphic relationship.

With season 4 of Bridgerton reaching its dramatic conclusion in late February 2026, fans of the beloved Regency-era series were on the hunt for any information about the next season. Luckily, on the 24th of March 2026, the official Bridgerton Netflix Instagram account answered fans’ desperate pleas with a carousel of images featuring Hannah Dodd (Francesca Bridgerton) and Masali Baduza (Michaela Kilmartin) alongside the caption: “Members of the ton rejoice! For Bridgerton Season 5 is underway.” Further information about the season 5 love match quickly followed, with Netflix’s Tundum writing an article giving all the juicy details for fans to feast on.
The article read: “The fifth season of Bridgerton spotlights introverted middle daughter Francesca. Two years after losing her beloved husband John, Francesca decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Francesca’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions.”

Francesca’s desires are described as difficult for her to deny, causing her to experience a mixture of yearning, queer joy, and queer trauma. The season follows her journey to self-discovery and brings a new element to the franchise.
“It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We’re not the first by any means,” says series showrunner Jess Brownell in the article. “But to make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.”
The teaser trailer has garnered 1,222,593 views on YouTube and nearly 900,000 likes on Instagram as of the 17th of April 2026. While some may be disappointed that Eloise’s story did not play out first, others are ecstatic about the LGBTQ+ representation and the ways in which Bridgerton has advocated for diversity.
Talking about the way Bridgerton champions inclusivity in the above article, Hannah Dodd says: “[Queer love stories] have traditionally been excluded from things like period dramas — and queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist.”
Baduza adds, “It’s been really special to have Jess guide us on this journey, because she’s very excited about this story. What we really want to achieve is giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and [giving them] a happily ever after.”

New faces will also pop up this series, as confirmed by Netflix on social media. The new season will see Jacqueline Boatswain (Hollyoaks) as Helen Stirling, Tega Alexander (The Sandman) as Christopher Anderson, and Gemma Knight Jones (MobLand) as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth. With their overbearing and overzealous natures coming to light, these three characters are sure to cause some disruption.
Someone else who is sure to be causing disruption is the new unidentified Lady Whistledown, as Brownell has confirmed her continued vested interest in the ton in season 5. "Shonda and I have an idea about who Whistledown is, and that's what we're writing toward," Brownell shares in Entertainment Weekly. "We'll definitely be planting some clues over the next few seasons for people to hopefully have their own guesses."
Bridgerton Season 5 is still in production, and the release date is predicted to be late 2027 or 2028. The turnaround time for this season is said to be much quicker, with Brownell hoping to produce new content in under two years. Season 6 has also been confirmed by Netflix, with the platform confirming the renewal in May 2025. For more information, visit www.netflix.com/tudum.
